Announcing: First Annual Indie Author Day, October 8, 2016
For countless years,
Traditional Publishing was the old
standby; the norm; the seemingly only respectable way to go as an author. In no
more than the recent past few years, two other types of publishing have emerged
as respectable. One is hybrid publishing,
and the other is indie publishing.
With traditional publishing, authors are
taken care of when it comes to editing, proofreading, distribution, publicity
and marketing, provided they can prove their credible worth to the publishing
house that takes them on. In return, the author is expected to appease the
needs and wants of the publishing house, even if at the sake of losing their
original vision or intention behind the writing of the manuscript.
For those authors
who lack a famous name, or who either can’t, or for any reason whatsoever, don’t
want to fully concede to editors, agents, and/or publishing houses, hybrid publishing is one of two other
viable options. The catch is that the author needs to be engaged in the entire
process, from pen to bookshelf. However, the authors retain opportunities to
remain in control, while knowing the outcome is dependent on their relationship
to their publisher.
Indie publishing is the option available for those authors who demand complete
control over the entire venture. Authors may of course, seek out resources from
editing to beta readers to printing places, etc. However, as an independent
author, rights to hire or fire any of their subcontractors are fully
enforceable. In a nutshell, the indie-author
is the author with a DIY mindset.
Anyone who has self-published
a book, irregardless of whether they have also published books through other
means, such as traditionally, or by hybrid, is an indie author.

Indie Author Day, Saturday,
October 8, 2016 will be an invaluable
opportunity of connection for indie authors, libraries, and publishing industry
specialists to come together for the sharing of resources, recognition, and
credibility. Nearly every state in America, and a few places in Canada, will have
a library or libraries host an event in celebration of this First Annual Indie
Author Day. Join me in support of indie authors. In Northern Kentucky, it will
be held at:
2 p.m.
The Boone County
Library,
Main Branch, in
Burlington, KY
1786 Burlington Pike
Or, if Kentucky is not your place, check out this website to find
out where your area will be hosting the event: http://indieauthorday.com/where/
Also check out the You TubeChannel for Indie Author Day, which on that Saturday at 2 pm EST, participating
libraries will live stream the event. A panel featuring Jon Fine, previously
from Amazon, as the moderator, and panelists Kiera Parrott of Library Journal,
Robin Cutler of Ingram Spark, 2012 Mover and Shaker award-winning librarian Jim
Blanton and BCALA award-winning author L. Penelope will host this video.
Me, personally? I’m leaning
toward hybrid publishing because I recognize that while I may be strong in some
areas, I need guidance to see my dream all the way through. However, I extend
my accolades to those who go the indie-way. And as authors come together, we
are a community, no matter who or what publishing domain is in conjunction with
our successes. Many members of my Covington Writers Group will be in attendance at the event held at the Boone County Library,
along with one of our members, Gary Reed, as a featured indie author, twice
published. I hope you join us.
